Bostwick, Georgia
The City of Bostwick is located 11 miles north of Madison. It was named after John Bostwick, a Georgia State Representative. More than any other individual, Bostwick helped develop and bring prosperity to the community. He built a cotton gin and was the leading force in organizing and establishing a railroad that ran from Bostwick to Apalachee, later winding its way to Monroe. The City of Bostwick thrived in the 1920's when cotton was king. It contained two gins, a cotton seed oil mill, depot and train station, bank, hotel, dry cleaning business, three doctors, a blacksmith shop, post office, and three businesses with gas pumps. Bostwick still has one of the few operational cotton gins in Georgia. Furthermore, Bostwick Supply Company, a general mercantile store, is still doing business today just as it did when the town first began. "While most cotton gins in North Georgia have closed or moved to other states, the Bostwick Gin holds on. It separates cotton seed from fiber, operating on the same principles as Eli Whitney's 1793 invention."
